This perfect texture makes them enjoyable for everyone, from little ones to grandparents, and ensures they remain delightful for days.
  • Harmonious Seasonal Flavors: The combination of fragrant cinnamon and rich maple is a match made in heaven, especially during the autumn and winter months. These flavors evoke a sense of coziness and nostalgia, making these cookies the quintessential treat for holiday gatherings and festive celebrations. The subtle hint of ginger, nutmeg, and mace further elevates their spiced profile, creating a truly unique taste experience.
  • Effortless & Elegant Decoration: Forget complicated piping bags or intricate frosting techniques! These cookies are designed for simple yet stunning decoration. A quick dip in melted white chocolate and a scattering of your favorite sprinkles transform them into impressive, festive masterpieces. • Flawless Shape Retention: A common frustration with cutout cookies is their tendency to spread or lose their distinct shapes during baking. Our recipe is specifically formulated to prevent this, ensuring your gingerbread men, snowflakes, or stars emerge from the oven looking crisp and defined. The secret lies in proper dough chilling, a crucial step we’ll detail further.
  • Generous Yield for Sharing: This recipe produces approximately four dozen cookies, making it perfect for sharing! Whether you’re hosting a large party, participating in a cookie exchange, or simply want to stock up on delicious treats, you’ll have plenty to go around. Everyone who tries them will undoubtedly ask for the recipe!
  • Ideal for Cookie Exchanges: Their robust structure and fantastic flavor make them excellent candidates for cookie exchanges. You can even bake the cookies ahead of time and then decorate them fresh at the exchange, making for a fun and interactive activity. Their universal appeal guarantees they’ll be a hit.
  • Aromatic Holiday Ambiance: As these cookies bake, your home will be enveloped in the comforting, enchanting aromas of cinnamon and maple. This natural fragrance instantly creates a warm, inviting, and truly festive atmosphere, setting the perfect mood for the holiday season. It’s baking that engages all the senses!

Now that you’re thoroughly convinced, let’s dive into some essential tips to ensure your Cinnamon Spiced Maple Cutout Cookies are nothing short of perfection.

Mastering the Art of Cutout Cookies: Essential Tips

Baking cutout cookies can be a delicate art, but with these expert tips, you’ll achieve perfect results every time. These insights will help you navigate the dough preparation, ensure your cookies hold their shape, and bake up to golden perfection.

  • Achieving the Right Dough Consistency: When you first mix the dough, it might appear a bit dry and crumbly. Don’t be alarmed! Continue mixing until it just begins to come together. The goal is a cohesive, yet pliable dough. If after thorough mixing it still seems too dry, add a tablespoon or two of milk, one at a time, until the dough reaches the desired texture – soft enough to roll without cracking, but firm enough to hold its shape. Refer to the images below for visual guidance on the ideal dough consistency.
  • The Golden Rule of Chilling: Chilling your dough is the single most critical step for preventing spread and ensuring your cutout cookies maintain their crisp edges. We recommend a two-stage chilling process: first, chill the dough thoroughly after mixing and forming into discs. Second, after cutting out your shapes and placing them on the baking sheet, pop them into the freezer for a few minutes before baking. This firming-up period makes all the difference!
  • Quality Ingredients for Superior Flavor: The foundation of any great cookie lies in its ingredients. Always opt for real butter and pure vanilla extract. The rich, creamy flavor of real butter significantly enhances the taste and texture of your cookies, while pure vanilla provides a depth of aroma that artificial extracts simply cannot replicate. These premium ingredients truly elevate the maple and cinnamon notes.
  • Avoid Overbaking at All Costs: Cutout cookies typically have a relatively short baking time, usually just 8-11 minutes. It’s crucial not to overbake them, as even a minute or two extra can transform a perfectly soft cookie into a dry, hard, and crumbly one. Keep a close eye on them; they should be lightly golden at the edges, but still appear soft in the center. They will continue to firm up as they cool on the baking sheet.

The dough in the photo above illustrates a slightly too-dry consistency. To remedy this, a tablespoon of milk was added, carefully mixed in until the dough became more moist and workable. The photo below displays the perfect, pliable texture we aim for—smooth, cohesive, and ready for rolling without cracking.

Prepare Ahead for Stress-Free Baking

One of the best features of this Cinnamon Spiced Maple Cutout Cookie recipe is its flexibility for make-ahead preparation. This allows you to spread out your baking tasks, making holiday preparations much more manageable and enjoyable.

  • Dough Preparation & Storage: You can prepare the cookie dough well in advance. After mixing, divide the dough into two flattened discs, wrap each tightly in plastic wrap, and then either chill them in the refrigerator overnight (or for up to 2-3 days) or freeze them for up to two months. If freezing, consider placing the wrapped discs into a freezer-safe bag to prevent freezer burn. When ready to bake, simply thaw the frozen dough in the refrigerator overnight before rolling and cutting.
  • Baking & Decorating Schedule: If your schedule is tight, you don’t have to bake and decorate on the same day. The baked, undecorated cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days. This is particularly convenient if you’re baking for a specific event and want to decorate closer to the date, ensuring fresh, beautiful cookies.
  • Freezing Cutout Shapes: For ultimate convenience, you can even cut out your cookie shapes and freeze them raw on baking sheets until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight freezer container or bag, separating layers with parchment paper. When you’re ready to bake, simply place the frozen cutouts directly onto prepared baking sheets and bake as directed; no need to thaw! This method is a game-changer for spontaneous baking sessions.

Unleash Your Inner Artist: Decorating Your Maple Cinnamon Cookies

While these Cinnamon Spiced Maple Cutout Cookies are delicious on their own, decorating them adds an extra layer of festivity and fun! The simple elegance of white chocolate and sprinkles is just the beginning.

Simple & Creative Decorating Ideas:

  • Classic White Chocolate Dip: The easiest and most visually striking method. Melt good quality white chocolate (chips or bars work great), dip half or all of the cooled cookie, and let the excess drip off. Before the chocolate sets, liberally sprinkle with your favorite festive decorations. This creates a clean, sophisticated look with minimal effort.
  • Cookie Cutters for Every Season: While I adore my snowflake and star cookie cutters for the holidays, feel free to use any shapes that inspire you! From pumpkins in autumn to hearts for Valentine’s Day, these cookies are versatile enough for any celebration.
  • Sparkling Sprinkles & Edible Accents: Elevate your cookies with a variety of sprinkles. I love these edible gold stars for a touch of glamour, and this festive mix of gold, white, and blue sprinkles adds vibrant color. Consider using different colors and shapes of sprinkles to match various holiday themes or personal preferences.
  • Beyond White Chocolate:
    • Royal Icing: For a more traditional and detailed decoration, royal icing offers a hard, smooth finish that’s perfect for intricate designs. It dries quickly, allowing for easy stacking and transport.
    • Cream Cheese Frosting: If you prefer a softer, tangier frosting, a simple cream cheese frosting tinted with food coloring can be a delightful choice. Spread it on with a knife for a rustic look or pipe it with a basic star tip.
    • Maple Glaze: To really amplify the maple flavor, whisk powdered sugar with a touch of maple syrup and milk for a simple, yet delicious glaze.
  • Kids’ Decorating Station: Set up a decorating station with various sprinkles, mini candies, and different colored icings. This is a fantastic activity for children and adults alike during the holidays, fostering creativity and shared memories.

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp mace (You can find this with other baking spices)
  • 2 sticks salted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated or cane sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 tsp maple extract
  • 2 TBSP real maple syrup

For Decorating:

  • White chocolate
  • Sprinkles (gold, white, blue, or your preference)

Instructions

  1. Make the Cookie Dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and mace. Set this mixture aside. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the softened butter until it’s light and fluffy. Add both the granulated sugar and packed brown sugar, mixing until thoroughly combined and creamy. Incorporate the eggs, vanilla extract, maple extract, and real maple syrup, mixing just until everything is combined. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture in two additions, mixing after each until just incorporated. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure an even mix. Stop mixing as soon as no pockets of flour remain. If the dough appears slightly dry and crumbly, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together into a soft, pliable mass (refer to photos in the blog post for ideal consistency).
  2. Chill the Dough: Divide the prepared cookie dough in half and gently flatten each portion into a disc, approximately 1 inch thick. Wrap each disc tightly in plastic wrap to prevent drying. Place the wrapped dough discs in the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight. For longer storage, the dough can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw frozen dough in the refrigerator overnight before proceeding with the recipe.
  3. Cut Out the Cookies: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Once the dough is properly chilled, unwrap one disc and roll it out on a lightly floured counter until it is uniformly between 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch thick. (I personally favor a slightly thicker cookie, around 3/8 inch, but the cookies pictured are closer to 1/4 inch). Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Gather any dough scraps, gently re-roll them, and cut out additional cookies until all dough is used. Carefully place the cut cookies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one. For best results in maintaining shape, chill the cookie-laden baking sheet in the freezer for 8 minutes before baking. This quick chill helps solidify the butter and prevents spreading in the oven.
  4. Bake and Decorate: Bake the chilled cookies in the preheated oven for 9-11 minutes. Baking times can vary depending on thickness and oven calibration; mine typically require the full 11 minutes, especially if rolled to 3/8 inch. The cookies should have lightly golden edges but still appear soft in the center. Allow the baked cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5-8 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once fully cooled, they are ready for decoration! Dip them in melted white chocolate, adorn with royal icing, or spread with your favorite frosting. Ensure the chocolate or frosting has fully set on the cookies before storing.
  5. Serve + Store: Once the chocolate or frosting has set, your delicious Cinnamon Spiced Maple Cutout Cookies are ready to enjoy! Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For optimal freshness and to prevent sticking, arrange them in layers separated by wax paper or parchment paper.
  6. Make Ahead Tips: The cookie dough is very forgiving for make-ahead preparation. You can prepare the dough up to 1 day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Alternatively, for longer storage, the dough can be frozen for up to 2 months. To freeze, wrap the dough discs tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe ziploc bag to ensure they are well-sealed and protected from drying out. Thaw frozen dough in the refrigerator overnight before use. Baked, undecorated cookies can also be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days before decorating, which is convenient for party planning. Additionally, cut-out cookie shapes can be frozen raw and baked directly from frozen; no adjustments to baking time are needed.

Notes

NOTE: The yield of this recipe can vary slightly depending on the size of the cookie cutters you use. If you prefer a smaller batch of cookies, this recipe can easily be halved.
