The Secret Ingredient: Rhodes Thaw, Rise, & Bake Dough
The true brilliance and simplicity of this recipe lie in using Rhodes Thaw, Rise, & Bake White Bread Dough (or their dinner rolls!). Rhodes has perfected the art of pre-made frozen dough, offering a product that eliminates the need for yeast, kneading, and lengthy rising times from scratch. This means you get all the delightful taste and texture of homemade bread without any of the hassle.
Using Rhodes dough ensures consistent results every time – a beautifully light, fluffy, and tender interior with a perfectly golden crust. It’s a game-changer for busy households and a secret weapon for effortless entertaining. Just thaw, let it rise, and you’re halfway to a sensational appetizer!
The Four Simple Ingredients: Simplicity Meets Flavor
Yes, it’s really true – you can make an incredibly flavorful appetizer like this with just four simple ingredients! Each component plays a crucial role in creating the irresistible taste and texture of these bread bites.
- Rhodes Thaw, Rise, & Bake White Bread Dough (or Dinner Rolls): The foundation of our dish. One loaf of bread dough or 12 dinner rolls provides the perfect canvas for our cheesy creation. Its convenience and quality are unmatched.
- Your Favorite Cheese: While the original recipe suggests blue cheese for its pungent, distinct flavor, this is where you can truly make the recipe your own. More on cheese options below!
- Salted Butter: Essential for both flavor and creating that desirable golden-brown exterior. Melted butter ensures every piece of bread is richly coated, adding moisture and richness.
- A Pinch of Garlic Powder: A humble ingredient that packs a powerful aromatic punch. Garlic powder infuses the bread with a savory, irresistible fragrance that complements the cheese beautifully.
That’s it! These fundamental ingredients, when combined, create a symphony of flavors and textures that will have everyone reaching for more.
Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Cheesy Baked Bread Bites
Making these cheesy bread bites is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple instructions for perfect results every time:
1. Thaw and Rise Your Dough
The first crucial step is to prepare your Rhodes dough. Whether you’re using a full loaf or individual dinner rolls, follow the package instructions meticulously for thawing and rising. Typically, this involves placing the frozen dough on a lightly greased baking sheet or in a bowl, covering it, and allowing it to thaw and rise in a warm place until doubled in size. This usually takes about 6-8 hours at room temperature, or overnight in the refrigerator for a slower rise. Patience during this stage is key for achieving light and airy bread bites.
2. Prepare Your Baking Dish and Dough
Once your dough has thawed and risen beautifully, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). While the oven heats, melt your butter directly in the 9-inch baking dish you plan to use. This saves on dishes and ensures an even coating. If you’re using a loaf of bread dough, cut it into approximately 20-24 large, bite-sized chunks. If you opted for dinner rolls, you can either leave them whole or cut each roll into 2-3 pieces.
3. Toss and Season
Add the cut dough pieces directly into the baking dish with the melted butter. Toss them gently but thoroughly, ensuring every piece is nicely coated. This butter layer is essential for both flavor and achieving that desirable golden crust. Arrange the buttered dough pieces in an even layer across the bottom of the dish.
4. Add the Cheese and Garlic Powder
Now for the star of the show: the cheese! Generously sprinkle your chosen cheese over the buttered bread pieces. Don’t be shy here – more cheese equals more flavor. Follow this with a pinch of garlic powder, distributing it evenly for maximum aroma. This beauty is now ready for the oven! Easiest appetizer ever.
5. Bake to Golden Perfection
Bake your Cheesy Baked Bread Bites in the preheated oven for approximately 28 minutes. You’ll know they’re almost done when the rolls begin to turn a beautiful golden brown. For an extra touch of shine and a deeper golden hue, you can optionally brush the tops of the bread with an egg wash (one beaten egg) after 28 minutes, then return them to the oven for another 3 minutes. This step is optional but highly recommended for that bakery-quality finish. Regardless, ensure a total baking time of 31 minutes to achieve perfectly cooked, fluffy, and cheesy bread.
6. Serve and Enjoy!
The most important part is to dive into this culinary delight while it’s hot out of the oven – the bread is light, fluffy, and buttery, and the cheese is beautifully melty and flavorful. The whole situation is just divine! Enjoy them immediately for the best experience.
Creative Variations & Customizations
While blue cheese offers a wonderfully sharp and distinct flavor, the beauty of these Cheesy Baked Bread Bites lies in their versatility. Feel free to experiment and customize them to your heart’s content!
- Cheese Choices:
- Cheddar: A classic choice for its sharp, familiar flavor and excellent melting properties.
- Gruyère: Offers a nutty, earthy depth that pairs beautifully with bread.
- Mozzarella & Provolone: For that ultimate pizza-like stretch and mild, creamy flavor.
- Parmesan & Asiago: Grate some fresh Parmesan or Asiago for a salty, umami kick.
- Monterey Jack: A mild, creamy cheese that melts incredibly well.
- Cheese Blend: Don’t limit yourself to one! A mix of two or three favorite cheeses (e.g., cheddar and Monterey Jack, or Gruyère and Parmesan) can add incredible complexity.
- Herb Infusions: Before baking, sprinkle a teaspoon of dried Italian herbs, oregano, thyme, or rosemary over the cheese for an extra layer of aroma and taste. Fresh chopped parsley or chives can be added after baking for a fresh finish.
- Spice It Up: A pinch of red pepper flakes mixed with the garlic powder will add a subtle warmth and zing.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning: For a trendy twist, sprinkle everything bagel seasoning over the top before baking for a crunchy, savory crust.
- Bacon Bits: Crumbled cooked bacon bits added with the cheese will introduce a smoky, salty crunch.
Serving Suggestions for Any Occasion
These Cheesy Baked Bread Bites are incredibly versatile and can be served in numerous ways:
- As an Appetizer: The perfect finger food for parties, game nights, or casual get-togethers. Serve them hot with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or a spicy aioli for dipping.
- Side Dish: A fantastic accompaniment to hearty soups, stews, chili, or pasta dishes. They absorb rich sauces beautifully.
- Breakfast or Brunch: Yes, really! Pair them with scrambled eggs and fresh fruit for a savory morning treat.
- Salad Enhancer: Break them apart and scatter over a fresh green salad for an added cheesy, crunchy element instead of traditional croutons.
- Main Meal Booster: Serve alongside grilled chicken, steak, or a roasted vegetable medley to complete a simple yet satisfying meal.
Storage and Reheating Tips
These Cheesy Baked Bread Bites are best enjoyed fresh, hot, and straight from the oven. However, if you happen to have any glorious leftovers, here’s how to store and reheat them:
- Storage: Allow the bread bites to cool completely. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
- Reheating:
- Oven: This is the best method for retaining texture. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the bread bites on a baking sheet and heat for 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through and the cheese is re-melted.
- Air Fryer: For a crispy exterior, reheat in an air fryer at 325°F (160°C) for 3-5 minutes.
- Microwave: While convenient, the microwave can make the bread a bit soft. Heat in 15-30 second intervals until warm.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Can I use fresh bread dough instead of frozen Rhodes dough?
- While Rhodes dough makes this recipe incredibly convenient and consistent, you can certainly use your favorite homemade or store-bought fresh bread dough. Just ensure it’s risen sufficiently before cutting and proceeding with the recipe.
- What if I don’t like blue cheese?
- No problem at all! As mentioned, this recipe is highly flexible. Cheddar, Gruyère, mozzarella, or a blend of your favorite melting cheeses are all excellent substitutes. Choose what you love!
- Can I prepare these bread bites ahead of time?
- You can prepare the dough (thaw and rise) ahead of time and keep it refrigerated for a short period (a few hours). However, for the best taste and texture, we recommend assembling and baking just before serving. The magic happens when they’re hot and fresh!
- How can I make these spicier?
- To add a kick, sprinkle a generous amount of red pepper flakes along with the garlic powder. You could also mix in a tiny bit of cayenne pepper with the cheese.
- Can I add other toppings?
- Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with finely chopped chives, dried herbs (like oregano or Italian seasoning), or even a touch of everything bagel seasoning for extra crunch and flavor.

Instructions
-
Prep: Thaw the Rhodes Thaw, Rise, & Bake dough according to package directions. Let it rise for 1 hour at room temp like the packaging says.
-
Assemble: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Melt your butter inside a 9-inch baking dish. Slice the bread dough (if using a loaf) into about 21 large chunks (see photos above). Toss the bread pieces in the butter to get them nice and coated. Nudge them into an even layer. Sprinkle the cheese on top, and add a sprinkle of garlic powder.
-
Bake: Bake 28 minutes. Rolls will be starting to get golden brown. I added a little egg wash (1 beaten egg, brushed over the tops of the bread) after 28 mins and baked them for 3 more minutes. This is optional but adds a nice shine and golden brown color to the bread. Either way, do bake for 31 mins total.
-
Serve + Store: Enjoy while hot + fresh from the oven! Store leftovers, well covered, in the fridge for a few days. This is best enjoyed fresh, however.
